The groundswell of handheld computer usage is rapidly changing the face of email. No longer are users viewing messages on large monitors or subject lines in fields of about 35-40 characters. Monitors have given way to 2" screens; subject lines, to fields of a few words.

Instant messaging and emailing are morphing as users incorporate IMing and texting abbreviations into emails. I'm not recommending that you start using these abbreviations quite yet, but know what they mean when you see them. Some popular abbreviations include @ (at), BFN (bye for now), CID (consider it done), CU (see you), FYI (for your information) HTH (hope this helps), IOW (in other words), L8R (later), NRB date (need reply by date), NRN (no response necessary), PLS (please), THX (thanks), TBA (to be announced), YW (you're welcome), and many more. Here are some tips to help you communicate more effectively with handheld computer users.

Subject lines

Many handhelds display only a few words in the subject line. That very valuable real estate will determine whether the intended receiver reads your message. Conventional wisdom has told us to write compelling subject lines. However, with such a limited field of view, it becomes a matter of what to skip, what to abbreviate, and what to start with. Here are a few suggestions:

• Instead of writing, "We need to reschedule the March meeting," consider writing "March mtg to be rescheduled."

• Instead of writing "I'll see you at 3:00"; consider writing "CU @ 3."

Calling attention to key information - Traditional ways of calling attention to information have included boldface, bullets, tabs, and more. Some of these methods don't always survive the trip through cyberspace and show up as gobbledygook on handhelds. Here are some options:

• Instead of using bullets, consider using asterisks (**), greater than symbols (>>), hyphens (--), or other ASCII characters.

• Instead of boldface, include some other way to emphasize the text. You may write **Deadline: May 5**. If the bold doesn't appear, the reader will still see **Deadline: May 5**.

• Instead of tabbing, use the space bar.

Attachments

If you send an attachment, summarize the essence of the attachment into a brief opening paragraph so the reader can get the gist of the message quickly.

Copying and pasting

If you copy and paste from another format (such as an Excel spreadsheet) the handheld may display the word Insert instead of the file that was pasted. Consider sending the file as an attachment.

Shortcomings: Although I am a big fan of Apple laptops, like everything else, the Apple MacBook Pro MB991LL/A laptop does have a couple of flaws. For instance, the aluminum casing seems to be prone to scratches. If you plan to travel a lot with the laptop, it's best to get a protective casing for it. If only this model had a Blu-ray drive. With Blu-ray discs becoming more and more popular by the day, it is strange that Apple did not get ahead of the game (as it usually does) by putting in Blu-ray drives in their computers.

Overall: All in all, the improvements made on the Apple MacBook Pro MB991LL/A far outweighs its shortcomings. Despite its flaws, this laptop model is actually one of the best laptop models this year. The combination of a great battery life, great specs, good design and a great OS makes it a formidable laptop.

Since its launch, the Acer Aspire One Netbook has been one of the best-selling netbook models around the world, and for good reasons too. The combination of a great design, a modest price tag and good features has made this model to be irresistible to many. Practical and Affordable

If you are one of those PC users that mostly use the desktops for checking the mail, watching some videos, surfing the web and word processing (like myself), the brand new Acer AspireRevo nettop will be the perfect desktop model for you. It is well designed, have most of the specs that we need and most importantly, extremely affordable.

The Acer AspireRevo ships with a CPU unit, a keyboard and a mouse, which are all white in color. The wide surface of the CPU unit is black in color with the word 'Aspire' inscribed in the middle. It is extremely small, measuring at 7.1 x 1.2 x 7.1 inches, making it one of the smallest desktops in the market. Overall, this little desktop model is extremely stylish and very pleasing to look at. All in all, the Acer AspireRevo nettop proves to be an excellent desktop model for running everyday computing tasks. Best of all, the price is also right. Currently, this nettop retails for just around $199 per unit.

10.1-Inch Netbook

Specifications & Features: You may be wondering why we are making a comparison between a netbook and a laptop. After getting my hands on he Acer Aspire AS1410, I can't help notice that the size and the pricing of this laptop is more that of a netbook. Because of that I have decided to make a quick comparison with the Asus 1005HA netbook, one of the best netbooks in the market.

Thanks to its slightly larger size, the AS1410 is able to pack in a series of more powerful specs. The only aspect that the Asus netbook would be able to prevail in this category would be its impressive 10.5-hour battery life. The AS1410 laptop has an Intel Core 2 processor, 2GB of RAM and a 250GB hard drive. The Asus netbook on the other hand has an Intel Atom processor, 1GB for RAM and a 160GB hard drive. The Acer model also comes with a HDMI port and a 11.6-inch LED HD screen while the Asus model has a smaller 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 resolution screen. Winner: Acer Aspire AS1410 11.6-inch laptop.

Design: The 1005HA netbook measures at about 10.31 x 7.01 x 1.44 inches, while the AS1410 measures at 11.2 x 8 x 1.2 inches. Both models have very stylish and distinctive designs but we won't choose a winner based on that, as it is a subjective matter. The netbook model weighs in at 2.81 pounds while the laptop weighs in at just 3.1 pounds. Although it is undoubtedly that the Asus netbook is the smaller and lighter machine, it is noteworthy that the AS1410 laptop is almost as portable as the netbook model. Winner: Asus 1005HA netbook.

Price: This is another interesting category as the AS1410 laptop is so modestly priced that is costs almost as much as a netbook. Current, the Acer laptop retails for just around $399 per unit. The Asus 1005HA on the other hand, retails for around $359 each. Although the netbook is the cheaper machine, I must say that the AS1410 laptop gives you much better value for your money. For just an additional $40 extra, you get a bigger hard drive, a bigger HD screen, a faster processor, more RAM, and a full-sized keyboard. That's what I call a bargain! But then again, some consumers may value the portability and amazing battery life of the Asus 1005HA more everything else. Winner: Draw

Desktop Review

Specifications: Although laptops and netbooks give you a lot of portability, there is nothing that matches the computing power of the good old desktop. The HP Pavilion P6210F for instance is currently one of the most powerful desktop models in the market.

This model has a 2.6Ghz Quad processor, a 640GB hard drive and 6GB of RAM. It uses the NVIDIA GeForce 9100 graphics card for rendering graphics. This desktop can also be configured to support up to 8 external speakers and also supports HD audio. It has an array of the usual ports and connectors that include 6 USB ports and 1 Firewire port. This model runs on Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit). It ships with a HP keyboard and mouse.

Currently, the new HP Pavilion P6210F is priced at just around $559 per unit. If you are looking for a powerful, practical and reasonably price desktop, this model would be perfect for you.

Office Calendar

With the world this busy these days, it is very important for people to be able to access their important emails online. It is not possible for them to just stay inside their offices to wait for emails. They would also like to work from their homes or go on vacation. This will lead to missed meetings and not being updated with their tasks.

The good thing these days is that new technology has found a way to synchronize mails and even tasks from your computer to any kind of hand held devices. This means that they can access their files through a server or get the emails in a real time manner. Even calendar sync is very possible with today's latest technology.

Laptop computers are becoming synonymous with business productivity, college education, and even gaming. Due to their portable nature, many companies are seeing laptops in more and more places as people find ways to take their business on the road. To accommodate this behavior, many large companies are constantly developing new applications and tools to help us interact with our computers.

Most recently, there is a trend toward more powerful and useful touchscreen inputs. An adjustable laptop stand can be perfect for using your laptop on a desk or table top. These stands are designed to place the monitor at eye level, thereby reducing strain on the neck. In most cases, these stands are used in conjunction with an external keyboard, which is kept flat on the desk. The adjustments are generally limited to up and down, with the ability to tilt forward and back. They often include a number of USB ports, allowing multiple external components such as hard drives and flash drives to be used by simply plugging them into the stand.

When buying any laptop stand, it is essential to ensure that they provide adequate air circulation between the computer and the stand itself. Low circulation can lead to problems with the processors overheating, causing the computer to shut down, and in extreme cases, causing permanent damage. To avoid this problem, stands are often created with a slightly concave platform, allowing air to move freely between it and the laptop. In some cases, the platform is left empty in the middle to allow for maximum air circulation. Another common solution is to use a cooling pad between the computer and stand. Good Gaming Laptops

Gaming has always been popular, but with the advancement of the technology that is now in laptops, it has taken on a whole new life of its own. As gamers are able to take their fun on the road, they are looking for good gaming laptops that will serve their needs. It is only a matter of time before they replace their desktops with these new machines.

The processor is going to be the first thing that you need to look for. If you are willing to spend at least a $1,000, there is no need to settle for anything less than a 2.0 GHz processor. To be honest, there are machines out there that are faster than that for the money and you are going to need every bit of that speed to have good game play.

You are also going to want to have at least 4GB RAM. A large hard drive is nice, but it is not necessary unless you are going to be permanently downloading the games. If you are playing them on the net, you are more interested in how much RAM the computer has and how fast it can process the information.

The next feature that you want is a large screen. You should be able to see the entire game screen when you expand. If you have to shrink it down, you may be missing out on some of the action. Don't settle for anything less than 15" and if you can, go at least 17" for the best play. After all, you are on a computer, not a PSP.

Finally, you need good graphics and plenty of USB ports. One of the reasons that gaming laptops cost a little more is because of the graphics that they have installed on them. You surely want something better than the standard and you will pay for it. The reason you want the USB ports on there is because it is always better to tap directly into the machine than to use a tower or spider. You can always get disconnected that way or suffer small delay. That is totally unacceptable when you are playing games.

Deciding Between

When you are out shopping for computers, you will see that they are often put into different categories that they are built specifically for. Gaming is no different and since it is more popular than ever, there are plenty of good gaming laptops to choose from. Two of the more popular and most affordable laptops are from Alienware and Sony.

Alienware is the big gaming company out of these two and has machines up and down in price points that will do just about anything that you want. The Area-51 M15x sells for about $1,200 and has a 2.8 GHz processor and 4GB RAM already installed in the machine. This translates to about 150 MPH when you are playing your games.

If you want to spend more money, Alienware will give you a machine that will pretty much blow everything else out of the water. They are always a good option because regardless of the price point, you are probably getting the best machine available. You can probably go down a level in price and still get a better machine than what you will see from someone else at the next price point.

The closest competitor in this price range would be the Sony VAIO NW180J/S. It actually costs about $200 less than the Alienware, but the technology and performance are not even close. This is no to knock the Sony, but you get so much more bang for your buck out the Alienware laptop that it is hard to pass up.

Just because laptops for gaming are close in price, it does not necessarily mean that they are anywhere near in quality. You have to really check their components and whatever you do, don't get too loyal to any one brand. If you are a Dell or Sony loyalist, you have no idea what you are missing out on by passing by Alienware.

Free Laptops - Are They Real?

Is getting a free laptop something that people can do, or is it all just a big scam? Well, that will greatly depend on the source that is offering those. • Keep alive or auto-reconnect feature. This feature is all about making sure the router stays connected. You may have a power cut, or the DSL line/ cable connection may drop for a few moments. In these scenarios, you want the router to sort itself out. Earlier models of home router did not handle this well, and even today some can still be bought that don't reconnect after a power cut or especially a broadband fault. The last thing you want is to go on holiday and then find you cannot log into your camera because a power cut several days ago left the router disconnected, so this is important.
• Encryption. Most routers these days offer some sort of encryption, usually known as WEP or WPA. WPA is stronger and preferable. Encryption is simply encoding the messages on your wireless network so that they cannot be intercepted easily.
