Our lives are almost entirely dependent on technology. We rely on it for everything from business to personal affairs. With all of the advancements happening at such a rapid pace, it is difficult to keep up with where we are going next. Rural internet access presents problems that more urban computer users can only dream about, in nightmares that is. I have struggled for years using only a dial-up connection and struggle it was. But no longer, since this little box has moved into the house.

Believe it or not, there are still quite a few locales where only dial-up is available rather than DSL or cable. And in some places like where I live the telephone equipment leaves much to be desired too. Rain causes the lines to do all kinds of things.

So the only options are either a satellite service which is a popular option or a system using one of the cell phone companies. Verizon works well here so that was the choice.

What I chose was the Verizon Wireless MiFi2200 receiver. This little card, which is what it looks like, not only can receive without wires, it also can transmit without wires too. In fact, it can work with up to 5 devices at a time. It's just like having your own hot spot right at home.

It comes with a plug in charger and will also operate on the internal battery. In addition, you can plug it to the computer using a USB cable to operate off the computer power. That seems to be a different connection based on the information displayed on the computer.

Verizon supplies a software download which serves as a dashboard for managing the wireless system. The software lets you track usage as well as access statistics about the connection.

So far service has been satisfactory, with usually a strong indicated signal. Speed is perceived as very fast at times and not as fast at others.

I did almost immediately have a battery charger problem and contacted Verizon by phone. The lady who helped me was very cordial. I decided to take the unit to a local Verizon store for repair or replacement. The problem was quickly identified and fixed.

This little Verizon wireless box has made rural internet much more usable for this heavy computer user. Productivity with the computer has soared.

Apple iPad Preview

The long awaited Apple tablet has finally been revealed. Steve Jobs pulled the wraps off on January 27th in a tense morning for Apple and tech fans all over the world. Now with the specifications and information out there it's time to preview the iPad and its potential.

First of all the design is pretty spectacular. The front is dominated by the large 9.7" LCD Led lit display that without a doubt will look great. Just below the screen you get the iPhone home button that allows you to go back to the beginning at all times. One less pretty feature for me are the black borders around the screen. They are a bit too wide for my taste, it would've been better if Apple was able to stretch the display a little and remove the borders. On the top you get the sleep button that will deactivate the display. On the right side you get the volume buttons and the silence switch, interesting is that the buttons have been moved from left (iPhone) to the right. On the back you get the large black Apple logo in the middle of a big gray (aluminum?) mass. It also says iPad on the back, the number of GBs and a few FCC things that are required to be there I think. It's not impossible to assume that the new iPhone will feature a similar back. The tablet is really thin, in fact it's just 0.5 inch thick, that's as thick as an iPhone. Height and width measures come in at: 9.6 inches and 7.47 inch.

Now lets talk about the software of the iPad. It works very similar to an iPhone. Slide to unlock and you're in the main screen with the typical iPhone icons. You get: YouTube, mail, Safari, contacts, iPod, iTunes, app store, video, settings, maps (by Google!), calendar, photos and last but not least notes.

The apps have been modified a bit for the new capabilities though. For example photos are now arranged by event blocks. Tapping on a block of photos will show you a preview of the photos in that event (or map for windows users). However you can also view your most treasured memories by list, location, faces or date. We can imagine that it will look really fantastic to manipulate the photographs on a huge touchscreen and to show it to your friends.

Another app Steve Jobs showed extensively was the Safari app. The browsing experience exceeds the desktop experience because you can touch and flick through the pages. And unlike the iPhone you now see the full webpages.

The App store will transform this device into things Apple alone could never achieve. You can run all the iPhone applications on it in either full screen or 1:1, the latter being the actual resolution we're used to from out favorite smartphone. But in addition to running the iPhone apps, the iPad will also get its own apps. Developers can create programs for it and utilize its full potential. The things we've seen in the keynote, including software from EA, looked okay but not very impressive. In a few months some amazing piece of codes will come out for the tablet we're sure.

I have taken everything into consideration and a few things bug me as of now. Firstly does the iPad have flash support? The tablet is suppose to deliver the best browsing experience ever, but flash is a big part of the experience.

Another thing is the hardware. Apart from the case and the touchscreen things aren't looking good on paper. It has a quadcore 1ghz processor built in from Apple, a company not specialized in these chips. I have fears that this A4 processor might not be fast enough for the really interesting apps. Another downer is the lack of iSight camera. This thing would have been amazing for conferencing or instant messaging, an opportunity missed there. Other hardware figures are a mystery. Like how quick is the graphics chip? And how much system memory does it have to work with?

And last but not least I'm having a hard time giving the software my two thumbs up. I think it looks to much like the iPhone software. The iPad would have been a much stronger product if the software allowed some advanced things like video editing or the ability to access and store files in finder windows (or maps for windows users).

To conclude. The iPad looks amazing and with a price of €499 it will sell really well. But much like the first iPhone launch the iPad has some obvious shortcomings. It isn't really fast, has no webcam and on top of that the software is lacking premium computing features. With that said I might still get one if the experience is as amazing as Steve Jobs expressed during his presentation. Which knowing Apple will probably be the case.

The XPS M1530 features a soft-touch finish for its chassis. What's wonderful is that it allows the buyer to choose from three different colors for its finish. Dell has decided to turn from the norm and not overload this machine with flashy designs and, as a result, it only has the soft-touch finish to boast of aesthetically.

Like mentioned earlier, Dell has made this notebook amazingly light: something it has not done with past models. The Dell XPS M1530 weighs an impressive 2.6 screen even if it has a sizable 15.4-inch LCD screen. This is ideal for businessmen and mobile computer users.

The Dell XPS M1530 is made up of strong and high quality materials which include steel, magnesium and aluminum. This would mean that the XPS M1530 is strong, durable and is able to resist the effects of wear and tear for a period of time.

The Dell XPS M1530 also comes with an impressive keyboard. All keys are full-sized, thus giving your fingers ample space and making usage comfortable for you. They are also soft and very responsive. The keyboard is complemented by an equally comfortable and sensitive touchpad.

One thing that can turn you off from the M1530, however, is its mediocre sound system. Placed on top of the keyboards, it is not supported by a subwoofer thus limiting the amount of bass that they can output. This will certainly ruin your audio experience.

While it certainly does have a good video card, it is far from being powerful. The NVIDIA GeForce Go 8600M installed on its motherboard only has a video memory of 256 MB, certainly not enough for heavy gaming. Typical games that demand little in video memory and processing power would be enough, as it's certainly up to the task. However, hardcore gaming is not a part of this machine's forte. Games like Crysis and Need for Speed's Pro Street are only rendered at very low frame rates, thereby greatly affecting the video and detail quality. I'm not recommending that you start using these abbreviations quite yet, but know what they mean when you see them. Here are some tips to help you communicate more effectively with handheld computer users.

Subject lines

Many handhelds display only a few words in the subject line. That very valuable real estate will determine whether the intended receiver reads your message. Conventional wisdom has told us to write compelling subject lines. However, with such a limited field of view, it becomes a matter of what to skip, what to abbreviate, and what to start with. Here are a few suggestions:

• Instead of writing, "We need to reschedule the March meeting," consider writing "March mtg to be rescheduled."

• Instead of writing "I'll see you at 3:00"; consider writing "CU @ 3."

• Instead of tabbing, use the space bar.

Attachments

If you send an attachment, summarize the essence of the attachment into a brief opening paragraph so the reader can get the gist of the message quickly.

Copying and pasting

If you copy and paste from another format (such as an Excel spreadsheet) the handheld may display the word Insert instead of the file that was pasted. Consider sending the file as an attachment.

First, a quick note about types of broadband and router compatibility. Your broadband service is likely to come through your phone line or perhaps via a satellite CCTV box. If it's through a phone line, you will need an ADSL modem/router, sometimes called a DSL modem/router. The modem part of the box is what talks to the phone line. On the other hand, if you have broadband from your cable supplier, you need a cable router. This is not the cable box itself, but another box that plugs into your cable box. The router's DDNS feature means that the router makes sure it always tells the DDNS provider what your current broadband IP address is. Therefore, even if the IP address changes, you can always contact your camera by using the same dyndns address, e.g. "http://mycamera.dyndns.com:8765".
Keep alive or auto-reconnect feature. This feature is all about making sure the router stays connected. You may have a power cut, or the DSL line/ cable connection may drop for a few moments. In these scenarios, you want the router to sort itself out. Earlier models of home router did not handle this well, and even today some can still be bought that don't reconnect after a power cut or especially a broadband fault. The last thing you want is to go on holiday and then find you cannot log into your camera because a power cut several days ago left the router disconnected, so this is important.
Encryption. Most routers these days offer some sort of encryption, usually known as WEP or WPA. WPA is stronger and preferable. Encryption is simply encoding the messages on your wireless network so that they cannot be intercepted easily. Make sure you get a router that offers at least one type of encryption that your wireless internet CCTV cameras offer. For example, it is no good getting a router which only does WPA encryption if your cameras can only do WEP.
